케임브릿지 사전은 'read (someone) the riot act'를 "to speak angrily to someone about something they have done and warn that person that they will be punished if it happens again(어떤 사람에게 그가 한 일에 대해 화를 내며 이야기하고, 그런 일이 또 일어난다면 처벌받을 것이라고 경고하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"He'd put up with a lot of bad behaviour from his son and thought it was time to read him the riot act(그는 아들의 나쁜 행동을 많이 참아 주었고, 이제는 그를 엄하게 타이를 때가 되었다고 생각했다)."
