케임브릿지 사전은 'figurehead'를 "someone who has the position of leader in an organization but who has no real power(한 조직의 지도자 위치에 있지만, 실질적 힘은 없는 사람)"라고 정의했다.

"The president of this company is just a figurehead - the Chief Executive has day-to-day control(이 기업의 회장은 그냥 명목상일 뿐이고, 최고 경영자가 일상의 통제권을 가지고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'figurehead'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone is the figurehead of an organization or movement, they are recognized as being its leader, although they have little real power(어떤 사람이 조직이나 운동의 figurehead라고 한다면, 그들이 힘이 거의 없음에도 불구하고 지도자로 여겨진다는 것이다)."
