케임브릿지 사전은 'stricture'를 "a statement of severe criticism or disapproval(심한 비판 또는 반감의 진술)"이라고 정의했다.

"The strictures of the United Nations have failed to have any effect on the warring factions(UN의 혹평은 싸우는 중인 파벌들에게 영향도 미치지 못했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'stricture'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You can use strictures to refer to severe criticism or disapproval of something(strictures라는 말을 어떤 것에 대한 심한 비판 또는 반감을 가리키는 데 쓸 수 있다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"...the Church's strictures on lending money at exorbitant interest(...터무니 없는 이자율의 고리대금업에 대한 교회의 비난)."

"His strictures against the bankers are misdirected(은행가들에 대한 그의 혹평은 오도되었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'stricture'를 "a severe criticism, especially of somebody’s behaviour(특히 어떤 사람의 행동에 대한, 심한 혹평)"라고 풀이했다.

"She merely ignored any strictures on the way she dressed(그녀는 자신이 옷 입는 방식에 대한 비난을 단순히 무시했다)."
