케임브릿지 사전은 'pail'을 "a bucket(양동이)"이라고 정의했다.

"Fill the pail with sand(양동이를 모래로 채워라)."

"It took several pails of water (= the amount a pail contains) to put out the fire(그 불을 끄튼 데 양동이 여러 개의 물이 들어갔다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pail'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A pail is a bucket, usually made of metal or wood(pail은 대개 금속이나 나무로 만들어진 양동이이다)."

"There was a pail for collecting water from the communal tap(공동 수도꼭지에서 물을 길어 올 용도의 양동이가 있었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'pail'을 "an open container with a handle, used for carrying or holding liquids, sand, etc.(액체나 모래 등을 옮기거나 담는데 쓰는, 손잡이가 달린 뚜껑 없는 용기)"라고 풀이했다.

"She filled the pail with fresh water(그녀는 양동이를 담수로 채웠다)."
