케임브릿지 사전은 동사 'preordain'을 "(especially of a power thought to be greater than ordinary people) to decide or fix what will happen in a way that cannot be changed or controlled((특히 보통 사람들보다 더 크다고 여겨지는 힘이) 바뀌거나 통제될 수 없다고 여겨지는 방식으로 무엇이 일어날지를 정하거나 고정하다"라고 정의했다.

"Illness and suffering seemed (to be) preordained to be her lot(병과 고통은 그녀 같은 이들에게 운명 지워진 것처럼 보인다)."

"His life seems to have followed a preordained path/direction(그의 삶은 이미 운명 지워진 길/방향을 따른 것처럼 보인다)."

콜린스 사전은 'preordained'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is preordained, you mean you believe it to be happening in the way that has been decided by a power such as God or fate(어떤 것이 preordained라고 말한다면, 그것이 신이나 운명 같은 힘에 의해 결정된 방식으로 일어난다고 당신이 믿는다는 뜻이다)." 격식을 갖춘(formal) 표현이다.

"...the belief that our actions are the unfolding of a preordained destiny(...우리의 행동이 이미 운명 지워진 운명대로 펼쳐진다는 믿음)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'preordained'를 "already decided or planned by God or by fate(신이나 운명에 의해 이미 결정되거나 계획된)"라고 풀이했다.

"Is everything we do preordained?(우리가 하는 모든 일은 이미 운명으로 정해진 것인가?)"

"They seemed preordained to meet(그들은 만나도록 운명 지워진 듯했다)."
