케임브릿지 사전은 'gumption'을 "the ability to decide what is the best thing to do in a particular situation, and to do it with energy and determination(특정한 상황에서 가장 좋은 일을 할 수 있고, 그것을 에너지와 투지를 가지고 할 수 있는 능력)"이라고 정의했다.

"She had the gumption to write directly to the company manager and persuade him to give her a job(그녀는 그 회사의 매니저에게 직접 편지를 써서 일자리를 달라고 설득할 상황 대처 능력이 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'gumption'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone has gumption, they are able to think what it would be sensible to do in a particular situation, and they do it(어떤 사람에게 gumption이 있다면, 특정한 상황에서 무엇을 하는 것이 분별 있는 행동일지 생각할 수 있고 그것을 할 수 있는 것이다)." 비격식적인(informal) 표현이다.

"Surely anyone with marketing gumption should be able to sell good books at any time of year(마케팅적인 상황 대처 능력이 있는 능력이 있는 이라면 누구든 한 해의 어느 때가 되었든 좋은 책들을 팔 수 있을 것이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'gumption'을 "courage and determination(용기와 투지)"이라고 풀이했다.

"She won't tell him because she hasn't got the gumption(그녀는 상황 대처 능력이 없기 때문에 그에게 말하지 않을 것이다)."
