케임브릿지 사전은 'foothold'를 "a strong first position from which further progress can be made(더 많은 진척을 이룰 수 있는 강력한 처음 입장)"라고 정의했다.

"We are still trying to gain a foothold in the Japanese market(우리는 아직 일본 시장에 발판을 얻으려고 노력하는 중이다)."

"Having survived the attack, the team had hopes of getting a foothold in the game(그 공격에서 살아남은 그 팀은 그 게임에서 발판을 얻을 거라는 희망을 가졌다)."
