케임브릿지 사전은 'sallow'를 "(of white-skinned people) yellowish and looking unhealthy((흰 피부의 사람이) 누렇고 건강하지 못해 보이는)"라고 정의했다.

"a sallow complexion/face(누렇게 뜬 안색/얼굴)"

콜린스 사전은 'sallow'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a person has sallow skin, their skin, especially on their face, is a pale-yellowish colour and looks unhealthy(어떤 사람이 sallow한 피부를 가졌다면, 그들의 피부, 특히 얼굴 피부가, 창백하게 누런 색이고 건강하지 않아 보인다는 것이다)."

"She had lank hair and sallow skin(그녀는 곧은 머리카락과 누런 피부를 가졌다)."

"His face was sallow and shiny with sweat(그의 얼굴은 누렇게 떴고 땀으로 번들거렸다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'sallow'를 "(of a person’s skin or face) having a slightly yellow colour that does not look healthy((사람의 피부 또는 얼굴이) 약간 누런 빛을 띄고 건강해 보이지 않는)"라고 풀이했다.
