케임브릿지 사전은 'homophone'을 "a word that sounds the same as another word but has a different meaning, or a different spelling and meaning(다른 단어와 똑같은 소리가 나지만, 뜻은 다른 또는 철자법과 의미가 다른 단어)"이라고 정의했다. 

"The words "see" and "sea" are homophones('see'와 'sea'라는 단어들은 동음이의어들이다)."

"Readers often wrote in to complain about homophones (complement, not compliment) and poor grammar(독자들은 대개 (compliment가 아니라 complement처럼) 동음이의어와 형편없는 맞춤법에 대해 불평하려고 편지를 보내 온다)."

콜린스 사전은 'homophone'을 이렇게 설명했다. "In linguistics, homophones are words with different meanings which are pronounced in the same way but are spelled differently. For example, 'write' and 'right' are homophones(언어학에서 homophone은 발음이 같지만 철자가 다르고 의미가 다른 단어들이다. 예를 들어서 'write'와 'right'는 동음이의어이다)."

"See if you can find more pairs of words that are homophones(동음이의어인 단어들의 짝을 더 찾을 수 있는지 보라)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'homophone'을 "​a word that is pronounced like another word but has a different spelling or meaning, for example plain, plane /pleɪn/(다른 단어와 발음이 같지만 다른 철자 또는 의미를 가진, 예를 들어 plain과 plane ㅏㄱㅌ은 단어)"이라고 풀이했다.
