케임브릿지 사전은 'unenviable'을 이렇게 정의했다. "An unenviable duty, choice, or situation is unpleasant or difficult(unenviable한 의무, 선택, 또는 상황은 불쾌하거나 어려운 것이다)."

"I had the unenviable task of cleaning up after the party(나는 파티가 끝난 후 청소하는, 탐나지 않는 과제를 맡았다)."

"They were left with an unenviable choice - flee with their families over the border, or stay and fight(그들은 국경을 넘어 가족들과 떠나거나, 남아서 싸워야 한다는, 부럽지 않은 선택을 할 수밖에 없었다.)."

콜린스 사전은 'unenviable'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe a situation or task as unenviable, you mean that nobody would enjoy dealing with it because it is very difficult, dangerous, or unpleasant(어떤 상황 또는 업무 또는 과제를 unenviable이라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 아주 어렵거나, 위험하거나, 불쾌해서 아무도 그것에 대처하는 일을 즐기지 않을 거라는 뜻이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'unenviable'을 "difficult or unpleasant; that you would not want to have(어렵거나 불쾌한; 가지고 싶어 하지 않는)"라고 풀이했다.
