케임브릿지 사전은 'progenitor'를 "the parent or direct ancestor of a person, animal, or plant(한 사람, 동물, 또는 식물의 부모 또는 직계 존속)"라고 정의했다.

"A child has a male progenitor and a female progenitor(아이에게는 남성 부모와 여성 부모가 있다)."

"A series of several persons descended from a common progenitor is called a line(공통된 조상에서 내려오는 일련의 사람들을 후예라고 부른다)."

콜린스 사전은 'progenitor'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A progenitor of someone is a direct ancestor of theirs(누군가의 progenitor는 그들의 직계 존속이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
