[영어 공부] get wind of something(…을 알아내다, 소문을 듣다)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'get wind of something'을 "to hear a piece of information that someone else was trying to keep secret(다른 사람이 비밀로 하려던 정보를 듣다)"이라고 정의했다.

"I don't want my colleagues to get wind of the fact that I'm leaving(나는 동료들이 내가 떠난다는 사실을 알아내길 바라지 않는다)."

콜린스 사전은 'get wind of something'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you get wind of something, you hear about it, especially when someone else did not want you to know about it(get wind of something 한다면, 그것에 대해 듣는데, 특히 어떤 사람이 당신이 알기를 바라지 않은 것을 듣는 것이다)." 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 표현이다.

"I don't want the public, and especially not the press, to get wind of it at this stage(나는 이 시점에서 대중이, 특히 언론이, 이것에 대해 알게 되기를 바라지 않는다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'get/have wind of something'을 "to hear or find out about something secret or private(비밀이거나 사적인 것을 듣거나 알게 되다)"이라고 풀이했다.

" You’d better hope the press doesn’t get wind of this(언론이 이 사실을 알게 되지 않기를 바라야 할 거야)."
