케임브릿지 사전은 'put someone through the wringer'를 "to ask someone difficult or unpleasant questions, often to find out if they are doing their job in a satisfactory way(대체로, 상대가 만족스럽게 자기 일을 하고 있는지 알아내기 위해, 어떤 사람에게 어렵거나 불쾌한 질문을 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Outside investigators will put the company's accounting practices through the wringer(외부 수사관이 그 회사의 회계 실무를 닦달해 댈 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'be put/go through the wringer'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone has been put through the wringer or has gone through the wringer, you mean that they have suffered a very difficult or unpleasant experience(어떤 사람이 put through the wringer 했다고, 또는 has gone through the wringer 했다고 말한다면, 그들이 아주 어렵거나 불쾌한 경험을 겪었다는 뜻이다)." 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 표현이다.

"He still wrestles with guilt at having put his loved ones through the wringer(그는 여전히 자신이 사랑하는 이들이 힘든 일을 겪게 한 데 대한 죄책감과 싸운다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'go through the wringer'를 "to have a difficult or unpleasant experience, or a series of them(일련의 어렵거나 불쾌한 경험을 하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
