케임브릿지 사전은 'know the score'를 "to know all the important facts in a situation, especially the unpleasant ones(어떤 상황에서 중요한 사실들, 특히 불쾌한 것들을 알다)"라고 정의했다.

"You know the score - no payment till after the article is published(너도 사정을 알잖아. 기사가 게재된 후가 아니면 입금해 줄 수 없어)."

콜린스 사전은 'know the score'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you know the score, you know what the real facts of a situation are and how they affect you, even though you may not like them(know the score 한다면, 어떤 상황의 실제 사실들이 마음에 안 든다고 하더라도, 그것들이 어떻고, 또 당신에게 영향을 끼칠지 알고 있다는 뜻이다)." 구어체(spoken) 표현이다.

"He knew the score; he knew what he had to do and couldn't do it(그는 상황이 어떻게 되어 가는지 알고 있었다. 그는 무엇을 해야 하는지 알고 ㅇ씨었고, 그걸 할 수가 없었다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'know the score'를 "to understand a situation and all the good and bad features about it(어떤 상황과, 그것의 좋은 점과 나쁜 점을 이해하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"I knew the score before I started the job(나는 일을 시작하기도 전에 일이 돌아가는 사정을 알고 있었다)."
