케임브릿지 사전은 'choppy'를 "(of sea, lakes, or rivers) with a lot of small, rough waves caused by the wind((바다, 호수, 강이) 바람에 의해 일어난 작은, 거친 파도가 많은)"라고 정의했다.

"They were airlifted to safety after their boat capsized in choppy seas(그들은 배가 일렁이는 파도에 뒤집힌 이후, 항공기를 통해 안전한 곳으로 옮겨졌다)."

"The water was choppy in the strong wind(수면은 강한 바람으로 출렁거렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'choppy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "When water is choppy, there are a lot of small waves on it because there is a wind blowing(수면이 choppy하다면, 바람이 불기 때문에 작은 파도가 많이 있는 것이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'choppy'를 "(of the sea, etc.) with a lot of small waves; not calm(바다 등이) 작은 파도가 많은; 고요하지 않은)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The choppy waters caused some of the boats to capsize(파도가 일렁이는 수면이 일부 배를 뒤집었다)."
