케임브릿지 사전은 'hanger-on'을 "a person who tries to be friendly and spend time with rich and important people, especially to get an advantage(부유하고 중요한 사람과 친하게 지내고 시간을 보내려고 노력하는 사람, 특히 이익을 얻기 위해 그렇게 하는 사람)"라고 정의했다.

"Wherever there is royalty, there are always hangers-on(왕족이 있는 곳에는 시녀들이 있게 마련이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hanger-on'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as a hanger-on, you are critical of them because they are trying to be friendly with a richer or more important person, especially in order to gain an advantage for themselves(어떤 사람을 hanger-on이라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 더 부유하거나 더 중요한 사람과 친하게 지내려고 노력하기 때문에, 특히 자신을 위한 이익을 얻으려고 그렇게 하기 때문에 그들에 비판적인 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
