케임브릿지 사전은 'denizen'을 "an animal, plant, or person that lives in or is often in a particular place(특정한 장소에 살거나 자주 그곳에 있는 동물, 식물, 또는 사람)"라고 정의했다.

"Deer and squirrels are among the denizens of the forest(사슴과 다람쥐가 그 숲에서 흔히 발견되는 동물이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'denizen'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A denizen of a particular place is a person, animal, or plant that lives or grows in this place(특정한 장소의 denizen은 그곳에서 살거나 자라라는 사람, 동물, 또는 식물이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
