케임브릿지 사전은 'unctuous'를 이렇게 정의했다. "Unctuous people or behaviour expresses too much praise, interest, friendliness, etc., in a way that is false and unpleasant(unctuous한 사람 또는 행동은 거짓되고 불쾌한 식으로 과한 칭찬, 흥미, 친근함 등을 표현하는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'unctuous'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as unctuous, you are critical of them because they seem to be full of praise, kindness, or interest, but are obviously insincere(어떤 사람을 unctuous하다고 묘사한다면, 그 사람은 칭찬, 친절, 또는 흥미로 가득찬 것처럼 보이지만 확실히 진실되지 못하다는 점을 비판하는 것이다)." 격식을 차리고(formal), 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'unctous'를 "​friendly or giving praise in a way that is not sincere and that is therefore unpleasant(진심이 아니고 따라서 불쾌한 식으로, 친근하게 굴거나 칭찬하는)"라고 풀이했다.
