케임브릿지 사전은 'affectation'을 "behaviour or speech that is not sincere(진실되지 않은 행동이나 말)"라고 정의했다.

""It doesn't concern me," he said with an affectation of nonchalance('그건 나랑은 상관없어.' 그가 태연한 척하며 말했다)."

"She has so many little affectations(그녀는 '척'하는 것들이 많다)."

"His manner reeks of affectation(그의 태도는 꾸민 척이 심하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'affectation'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone's attitude or behaviour is an affectation, you disapprove of the fact that it is not genuine or natural, but is intended to impress other people(어떤 사람의 태도나 행동을 affectation이라고 한다면, 그것이 진심이 아니거나 자연스럽지 않지만, 다른 사람들에게 깊은 인상을 주기 위해 의도된 것이라는 사실을 못마땅해하는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'affectation'을 "behaviour or an action that is not natural or sincere and that is often intended to impress other people(자연스럽거나 진실되지 않으며, 다른 사람들에게 깊은 인상을 주기 위해 의도된 행동이나 행위)"이라고 풀이했다.

"His little affectations irritated her(그가 젠체하는 게 그녀를 짜증나게 했다)."

"Kay has no affectation at all(케이는 가식이 전혀 없다)."

"He raised his eyebrows with an affectation of surprise (= pretending to be surprised)(그는 놀란 척하며 눈썹을 올렸다)."
