케임브릿지 사전은 'square the circle'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If you try to square the circle, you try to do something that is very difficult or impossible(square the circle 하려고 노력한다면, 아주 어렵거나 불가능한 일을 하려고 하는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'square the circle'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone squares the circle, you mean that they bring together two things which are normally thought to be so different that they cannot exist together(누가 square the circle 한다면, 보통 무척 달라서 같이 존재할 수 없는 것들을 묶으려 하는 것이다)."

"He has squared the circle of keeping the City happy and doing something to improve business cash flow(그는 도시를 행복하게 하는 동시에 비즈니스 현금 흐름을 개선시키는 불가능한 일을 했다)."

롱맨 사전은 'square the circle'을 "to attempt something impossible(불가능한 일을 시도하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
