[영어 공부] subsist(근근이 살아가다[먹고 살다])

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'subsist'를 "to get enough food or money to stay alive, but no more(딱 간신히 살아 있을 정도의 음식이나 돈을 얻다)"라고 정의했다.

"The prisoners were subsisting on a diet of bread and water(수감자들은 빵과 물의 식단으로 근근히 살아갈 뿐이었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'subsist'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If people subsist, they are just able to obtain the food or money that they need in order to stay alive(사람들이 subsist 한다면, 살아가기 위해 필요한 음식 또는 돈을 간신히 구할 수 있는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"The prisoners subsisted on one mug of the worst quality porridge three times a day(수감자들은 하루에 세 번, 최악의 포리지 한 컵만으로 연명했다)."

"Almost every employee must moonlight in second jobs simply to subsist(거의 모든 직원들이 근근히 먹고살기 위해 투잡을 뛰어야 한다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'subsist'를 "to manage to stay alive, especially with limited food or money(특히, 제한된 음식 또는 돈으로, 간신히 살아가다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Old people often subsist on very small incomes(노인들은 대개 아주 적은 수입으로 근근히 살아간다)."
