케임브릿지 사전은 'ho=hum'을 "not interesting; boring(흥미롭지 않은; 지루한)"이라고 정의했다.

"The chess match was a ho-hum affair, ending in a draw(그 체스 경기는 무승부로 끝이 난, 지루한 사건이었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ho hum'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You can use ho hum when you want to show that you think something is not interesting, remarkable, or surprising in any way(ho hum은 어떤 것이 어떤 면으로든 흥미롭거나 뛰어나거나, 놀랍지 않다고 생각한다는 사실을 보여 주기 위해 쓸 수 잇다)." 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 표현이다.

"My general reaction to this news might be summed up as 'ho-hum'(이 뉴스에 대한 내 전반적인 반응은 '시시해'라는 말로 요약될 수 있다)." 

"The music is generally terrific but the scripting and acting are a bit ho-hum(음악은 대체적으로 좋지만, 각본과 연기는 좀 지루했다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'ho-hum'을 "not very good or interesting(아주 좋거나 흥미롭지 않은)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The main courses were great, but the desserts were ho-hum(메인 코스는 훌륭했지만, 디저트는 시시했다)."
