케임브릿지 사전은 'wait in the wings'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone or something is waiting in the wings, they are not yet active or important, but are ready or likely to be so soon(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 wait in the wings 한다면, 아직 활동적이거나 중요한 것은 아니지만, 준비가 되어 있거나 곧 그렇게 될 가능성이 있는 것이다)."

"The team has several talented young players waiting in the wings(그 팀은 몇 명의 재능 있는 젊은 선수들을 대기시키고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'wait in the wings'를 "to wait for an opportunity to take action, especially to take over another person's job or position(특히, 어떤 사람의 일자리나 지위를 넘겨받기 위해, 행동에 옮길 기회를 기다리다)"이라고 설명했다.
