케임브릿지 사전은 'crony'를 "a friend, or a person who works for someone in authority, especially one who is willing to give and receive dishonest help(특히, 부정직한 도움을 주고받을 의향이 있는 친구, 또는 권위를 가진 사람을 위해 일하는 사람)"라고 정의했다.

"The general and his cronies are now awaiting trial for drug smuggling(장군과 그의 친구는 이제 마약 밀수 건으로 재판을 기다리고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'crony'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You can refer to friends that someone spends a lot of time with as their cronies, especially when you disapprove of them(어떤 사람이 많은 시간을 보내는 친구를 crony라고 표현할 수 있는데, 특히 그들을 못마땅하게 여길 때 그러하다)." 격식을 차리지 않고(informal), 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 표현이다.

"He played a round of golf with his business cronies(그는 사업 친구들과 골프를 한 라운드 쳤다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'crony'를 "​a person that somebody spends a lot of time with(어떤 사람이 많은 시간을 같이 보내는 사람)"라고 풀이했다.

"He was playing cards with his cronies(그는 친구들과 카드 놀이를 하고 있었다)."
