케임브릿지 사전은 'condescension'을 "behaviour that shows you think you are more important or more intelligent than other people(자신이 다른 사람들보다 더 중요하거나 더욱 지적이라고 생각한다는 점을 보여 주는 행동)"이라고 정의했다.

"He looked at me with condescension and pity in his eyes(그는 우월감과 동정심을 담은 눈으로 나를 바라보았다)."

"She answered him with such haughty condescension that his face went white(그녀는 거만한 우월감으로 그에게 대답해서 그의 얼굴이 창백해질 정도였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'condescension'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Condescension is condescending behaviour(condescension은 잘난 체하는 행동이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
