케임브릿지 사전은 'en route'를 "on the way to or from somewhere(어디로, 또는 어디에서 시작해 가는 길에)"라고 정의했다.

"I stopped en route (to the party) and got some wine(나는 (파티에) 가는 길에 멈춰서 와인을 샀다)." 

"The bomb exploded while the plane was en route from Paris to Tokyo(그 비행기가 파리에서 출발해 도쿄로 가는 도중에 폭탄이 폭발했다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'en route'를 이렇게 설명했다. "En route to a place means on the way to that place. En route is sometimes spelled on route in non-standard English(어디로 가는 en route는 그곳으로 가는 도중이라는 뜻이다. en route는 때로 on route라는 비표준 영어로 쓰이기도 한다)." 

"They have arrived in London en route to the United States(그들은 미국에 가는 중에 런던에 도착했다)."

"One of the bags was lost en route(가방들 중 하나를 도중에 잃어버렸다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'en route'를 "on the way(도중에)"라고 풀이했다. 

"We happened to be passing through London en route to Germany(우리는 독일로 가는 길에 우연히 런던을 지나가게 됐다)."
