[영어 공부] upend((위아래를) 거꾸로 하다[뒤집다])

 

어떤 것을 'upend'한다면 위아래를 완전히 뒤집는 것이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'upend'를 "to push or move something so that the part that usually touches the ground is not touching the ground any more(대개 바닥에 닿는 쪽이 더 이상 바닥을 닿지 않도록 밀어올리거나 움직이다)"라고 정의했다.

"She upended the chessboard halfway through the game because she was losing(그녀는 지고 있었기 때문에 게임의 중반쯤에 체스판을 뒤집어 버렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'upend'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you upend something, you turn it upside down(어떤 것을 upend 한다면, 그것을 뒤집는 것이다)."

"He upended the can, and swallowed(그는 캔을 뒤집었고 삼켰다)." 

"...upended flower pots(화분을 뒤집었다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'upend'를 "to turn something upside down(어떤 것을 뒤집다)"이라고 풀이했다.
