의도는 좋았는데 어쩌다 보니 상황상 일이 꼬여서 내가 남에게 피해를 주거나, 잘되어 가던 일을 망치는 일이 종종 있다.

그럴 때 'someone's heart is in the right place'라는 표현을 쓸 수 있다. '~의 마음은 진심이다[선의에서 나온 것이다]'라는 뜻인데, 예컨대 잘해 보려다 실수한 사람을 두둔해 주며 'his[her] heart is in the place'라고 말할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'someone's heart is in the right place'를 "someone only has good intentions(오직 좋은 의도일 뿐이다)"라고 정의했다.

"He is very strict with his students, but his heart is in the right place(그는 학생들에게 아주 엄격하게 대하지만, 학생들을 위하는 마음은 진심이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'heart in the right place/heart is in the right place'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone's heart is in the right place, you mean that they are kind, considerate, and generous, although you may disapprove of other aspects of their character(someone's heart is in the right place라고 말한다면, 그 사람 성격의 다른 부분을 못마땅하게 여길지도 모르지만 그래도 그 사람이 친절하고 배려심이 있으며 관대하다는 뜻이다)."

"He is a bit of a tearaway but his heart is in the right place(그는 좀 불량배이긴 하지만 그래도 마음은 착하다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'someone's heart is in the right place'를 "used for saying that someone tries to be kind and do good things even though it does not always seem like this(언제나 그렇게 보이지는 않더라도 어떤 사람이 친절하고 착한 일을 하려고 노력한다는 뜻으로 쓰이는 말)"라고 풀이했다.

"His heart’s in the right place but he’s a bit mixed up(그는 의도는 좋은데 조금 정서적 장애가 있다)."
