[영어 공부] choke up((감정에 겨워) 목이 메이다)

 

감정에 겨워서, 감정이 북받쳐 올라 목이 메여 말을 할 수 없거나 그럴 것 같을 때 'choke up'이라는 표현을 쓴다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'choke up'을 "to become unable to speak or almost begin to cry because of sadness or strong emotion(슬픔이나 강렬한 감정 때문에 말할 수 없게 되거나 거의 울기 시작할 뻔하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"When I watch the tape of his Olympic victory I still choke up(그가 올림픽에서 승리한 일을 찍은 테이프를 보면 나는 아직도 목이 메인다)."

"He admits he choked up a little at the end(그는 마지막에 목이 좀 메였다고 인정한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'choke up'을 "to overcome (a person) with emotion, esp without due cause(특히 정당한 이유 없이 어떤 감정이 벅차오르다)"라고 설명했다.

맥밀란 사전은 'choke up'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "if someone chokes up, or if something chokes them up, they cannot speak because they are starting to cry(누가 choke up 한다면, 또는 어떤 것이 그들을 choke up 시킨다면, 울기 시작해서 말을 할 수 없는 것이다)"

"When we met again after five years, I just choked up(우리가 5년 후 다시 만났을 때, 나는 목이 메였다)."
