[영어 공부] upbeat(긍정적인, 낙관적인)

 

음악의 박자가 빠른 편이라면 분위기가 축축 처지고 우울한 느낌을 줄 수 없을 것이다. 그래서 'upbeat'는 '긍정적인, 낙관적인'이라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'upbeat'를 "full of hope, happiness, and good feelings(희망, 행복, 그리고 좋은 감정들로 가득 찬)"라고 정의했다.

"Live music and a parade set an upbeat mood for the official opening(라이브 음악과 퍼레이드가 공식 개장에 긍정적인 분위기를 조성해 주었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'upbeat'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If people or their opinions are upbeat, they are cheerful and hopeful about a situation(사람 또는 그들의 의견이 upbeat하다면, 그(것)들이 어떤 상황에 관해 쾌활하고 희망적이라는 뜻이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"The Home Secretary gave an upbeat assessment of the campaign so far(내무 장관은 지금까지의 그 캠페인을 긍정적으로 평가했다)." 

"Neil's colleagues say he was actually in a joking, upbeat mood(닐의 동료는 사실 그냥 농담한 거라고, 가벼운 기분으로 말했다)." 

"Scientists remain upbeat about the information that will be gathered(과학자들은 앞으로 모을 수 있는 정보에 관해 낙관적이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'upbeat'를 "happy and positive because you are confident that you will get what you want(자신이 원하는 것을 얻으리라고 자신하기 때문에 행복하고 긍정적인)"라고 풀이했다.

"The players seemed upbeat about their chances of winning(선수들은 승리 가능성에 낙관적인 것 같아 보인다)."
