[영어 공부] uphold(법, 원칙 등을) 유지시키다[옹호하다])

 

자유의 여신상이 횃불을 들고 있듯 어떤 원칙 또는 법을 소중히 여겨 위로(up) 들고(hold) 있다면 그것을 유지하려고 노력하고 옹호하는 것이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'uphold'를 "to defend or keep a principle or law, or to say that a decision that has already been made, especially a legal one, is correct(원칙이나 법을 옹호하거나 지키다, 또는 이미 내려진 결정, 특히 법적인 결정이 옳다고 말하다)"라고 정의했다.

"As a police officer you are expected to uphold the law whether you agree with it or not(경찰로서 당신은 법이 마음에 들든 안 들든 그 법을 지켜야 합니다)."

"Judge Davis upheld the county court's decision(데이비스 판사는 지방 법원의 결정을 옹호했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'uphold'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you uphold something such as a law, a principle, or a decision, you support and maintain it(법, 원칙, 또는 결정 같은 것을 uphold한다면, 그것을 지지하고 유지하는 것이다)."

"Our policy has been to uphold the law(우리의 정책은 법을 옹호하는 것입니다)."

"It is the responsibility of every government to uphold certain basic principles(특정한 기초 원칙들을 옹호하는 것이 모든 정부의 책임입니다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'uphold'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if a court of law upholds something such as a claim, it says that it is correct(법원이 주장 같은 것을 uphold한다면, 그것이 옳다고 말하는 것이다)"

"The Home Secretary’s decision was upheld by the House of Lords(내무 장관의 결정을 상원 의원들이 옹호했다)."
