[영어 공부] on the cards((어떤 일이) 발생할[일어날] 것 같은)

 

어떤 일이 일어날 법하다는 걸 '(be) on the cards'라고 표현할 수 있는데, 이때의 카드는 점을 치는 타로 카드 같은 게 아닐까 싶다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'be on the cards'를 "to be likely to happen(일어날 가능성이 있다)"이라고 정의했다.

""So you think they'll get married next year?" "I think it's on the cards."("그들이 내년에 결혼할 거 같니?" "내 생각엔 그럴 것 같아.")"

콜린스 사전은 'on the cards'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is on the cards in British English, or in the cards in American English, you mean that it is very likely to happen(어떤 것이 영국식 영어로 on the cards 또는 미국식 영어로 in the cards 하다면, 그것이 일어날 가능성이 크다는 뜻이다)."

"Last summer she began telling friends that a New Year marriage was on the cards(지난여름 그녀는 새해에 결혼할 가능성이 높다고 이야기하고 다니기 시작했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'on the cards'를 "very likely to happen(일어날 가능성이 큰)"이라고 풀이했다.

"An election is on the cards this year(올해에 선거가 있을 것 같다)."
