[영어 공부] nondescript(별 특징 없는)

 

뭔가를 묘사하려면 일단 특징을 잡아야 한다. 근데 별 특징이 없으면 설명하기가 쉽지 않다. 그런 게 'nondescript'한 거다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'nondescript'를 "very ordinary, or having no interesting or exciting features or qualities(아주 평범한, 또는 흥미롭거나 흥미진진한 특징 또는 자질이 없는)"라고 정의했다.

"Their offices are in a nondescript building on the edge of town(그들의 사무실은 이 동네 끝자락에 있는, 별 특징 없는 건물에 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'nondescript'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something or someone as nondescript, you mean that their appearance is rather dull, and not at all interesting or attractive(어떤 것 또는 어떤 사람을 nondescript라고 묘사한다면, 그 외모가 다소 따분하고, 전혀 흥미롭거나 매력적이지 않다는 뜻이다)."

"Europa House is one of those hundreds of nondescript buildings along the Bath Road(유로파 하우스는 배스 로드에 있는 별 특징 없는 수백 개의 건물들 중 하나이다)."

"...a nondescript woman of uncertain age(나이를 알 수 없는, 이렇다 할 특징이 없는 여성)."

"Her clothes told me nothing: they were about as nondescript as it was possible to be(그녀의 옷을 보고서는 아무것도 알 수 없었다. 그 옷들이 너무나 특징이 없었기 때문이다)."

롱맨 사전은 'nondescript'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "someone or something that is nondescript looks very ordinary and is not at all interesting or unusual(nondescript한 누군가 또는 어떤 것은 아주 평범해 보이고 전혀 흥미롭거나 색다르지 않은 것이다)"
