[영어 공부] land/fall on your feet(넘어지지 않고 서다, 난관을 타개하다)

 

고양이는 얼마나 높은 곳에서 떨어졌든간에 언제나 가뿐하게, 안전하게 착지한다. 그것처럼 어려운 상황에서도 (노력 또는 행운 등으로) 난관을 타개하는 걸 'land/fall on your feet'이라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'land on your feet'를 "to be successful or lucky, especially after a period of not having success or luck(특히 성공하지 못하거나 운이 좋지 못했던 시기 이후에, 성공하거나 운이 좋다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Don't worry - she always lands on her feet(걱정 마. 그녀는 언제나 오뚜기처럼 일어서니까)."

콜린스 사전은 'land on your feet'를 이렇게 설명했다.
"If you say that someone always lands on their feet, you mean that they are always successful or lucky, although they do not seem to achieve this by their own efforts(누군가가 언제나 land on their feet 한다고 말한다면, 그들이 개인적 노력을 통해 그것을 얻지 않는 것처럼 보여도 언제나 성공하거나 운이 좋다는 뜻이다)."

"He has good looks and charm, and always lands on his feet(그는 준수한 외모와 매력이 있고 언제나 일이 잘 풀린다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'land/fall on your feet'를 "to be lucky and get into a good situation after being in a difficult one(운이 좋아서 어려운 상황에서 좋은 상황으로 옮겨 가다)"이라고 풀이했다.
