[영어 공부] tame(재미없는, 지루한, 단조로운)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'tame'을 "not interesting or exciting(흥미롭지 않거나 신나지 않는)"이라고 정의했다.

"It was a tame film in comparison to some that she's made(이것은 그녀가 만든 다른 영화들에 비교하면 재미없는 영화다)."

콜린스 사전은 'tame'을 이렇게 설명헀다. "If you say that something or someone is tame, you are criticizing them for being weak and uninteresting, rather than forceful or shocking(어떤 것 또는 누가 tame 하다고 말하면, 그것이 강력하다거나 충격적이기보다는 약하고 흥미롭지 않다고 비판하는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"Some of today's political demonstrations look rather tame(오늘날 정치적 데모들 일부는 다소 과격함과는 거리가 멀다)." 

"The report was pretty tame stuff(그 보고서는 꽤 순한 맛이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'tame'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "something that is tame is slightly boring because it is not exciting, interesting, powerful, or dangerous enough(tame 한 것은 충분히 신이 나거나, 흥미롭거나, 강력하거나, 위험하지 않아서 조금 지루한 것이다)"

"The match was a bit tame(그 경기는 좀 지루했다)."
