케임브릿지 사전은 'see the light of day'를 이렇게 정의했다. "When something sees the light of day, it appears for the first time(어떤 것이 see the light of day 한다면, 그것이 처음으로 드러나는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'see the light of day'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something sees the light of day at a particular time, it comes into existence or is made known to the public at that time(어떤 것이 특정한 시간에 see the light of day 한다면, 그때 존재하게 되거나 대중에게 알려지는 것이다)."

"This extraordinary document first saw the light of day in 1966(그 뛰어난 문서는 1966년에 세상에 처음으로 알려졌다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'see the light of day'의 두 가지 의미를 다음과 같이 풀이했다. 첫째, "if an object sees the light of day, it is brought out of a place where it has been for a long time(어떤 사물이 see the light of day 한다면, 오랫동안 그것이 있었던 공간에서 가지고 나오는 것이다)"

둘째, "if something such as an idea, plan, or rule sees the light of day, it starts to exist(아이디어, 계획, 규칙 같은 것이 see the light of day 한다면, 존재하기 시작하는 것이다)"
