케임브릿지 사전은 'humdrum'을 "having no excitement, interest, or new and different events(흥분, 관심, 또는 새롭고 다른 사건들이 없는)"라고 정의했다.

"We lead such a humdrum life/existence(우리는 그토록 단조로운 삶을/존재를 살아간다)."

"Most of the work is fairly humdrum(그 일의 대부분은 따분하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'humdrum'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone or something as humdrum, you mean that they are ordinary, dull, or boring(어떤 사람 또는 사물을 humdrum이라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 평범하거나, 단조롭거나, 따분하다는 뜻이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"...a lawyer, trapped in a humdrum but well-paid job(...따분하지만 돈은 잘 벌리는 일이라는 함정에 빠진 변호사)." 

"The new government seemed rather humdrum(새로운 정부는 다소 단조로워 보였다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'humdrum'을 "boring because nothing new or interesting ever happens(새롭거나 흥미로운 일이 전혀 일어나지 않기 때문에 지루한)"라고 풀이했다.
