케임브릿지 사전은 'the bare minimum'을 "the least possible amount(가능한 한 가장 적은 양)"라고 정의했다.

"She eats only the bare minimum to stay alive(그녀는 살아 있기 위해 최소한의 양만 먹는다)."

콜린스 사전은 'bare'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you talk about the bare minimum or the bare essentials, you mean the very least that is necessary(bare minimum이나 bare essentials라고 한다면, 필요한 가장 적은 양[것]을 말하는 것이다)."

"The army would try to hold the western desert with a bare minimum of forces(그 군대는 최소한의 병력으로 서부 사막 지대를 지키려고 할 것이다)."
