케임브릿지 사전은 'accost'를 "to go up to or stop and speak to someone in a threatening way(위협적으로 누군가에게 다가가거나 그들을 멈춰 세워서 말을 걸다)"라고 정의했다.

"I'm usually accosted by beggars and drunks as I walk to the station(역으로 가는 길에 대개 거지들과 술 취한 사람들이 내게 말을 걸곤 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'accost'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone accosts another person, especially a stranger, they stop them or go up to them and speak to them in a way that seems rude or threatening(누군가 다른 사람에게, 특히 낯선 사람에게 accost 한다면, 그들을 멈추게 하거나 그들에게 다가가서 무례하거나 위협적으로 말을 거는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)하고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"Wherever he goes he is accosted by young people asking for his autograph(그가 어디를 가든 사인을 요청하는 젊은이들이 그에게 말을 건다)."
