케임브릿지 사전은 'reportedly'를 "according to what many people say(많은 사람이 말하는 바에 의하면)"라고 정의했다.

"New York is reportedly a very exciting place to live(뉴욕은 듣자 하니 살기에 아주 흥미로운 곳이라 하더군요)."

콜린스 사전은 'reportedly'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is reportedly true, you mean that someone has said that it is true, but you have no direct evidence of it(어떤 것이 reportedly 참이라면, 누군가 그것이 참이라고 말했지만, 당신이 그것의 직접적 증거를 가지고 있지는 않다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"More than two hundred people have reportedly been killed in the past week's fighting(전하는 바에 따르면, 지난주의 전투에 200명이 넘는 사람들이 사망했다고 합니다)."

"Now Moscow has reportedly agreed that the sale can go ahead(이제 러시아 정부도 판매를 허용하는 데 동의했다고 전해집니다)."

"General Breymann had been shot dead, reportedly by one of his own men(브레이만 장군은 총에 맞아 사망했다고, 그의 부하들 중 한 명이 전했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'reportedly'를 "used for showing that you are not certain that something you are reporting is true(당신이 보고하는 어떤 것이 참인지 확신할 수 없음을 드러내기 위해 쓰이는 말)"라고 풀이했다.

"They have reportedly refused to consider his offer(그들은 그의 제안을 고려하기를 거절했다고 전해진다)."
