케임브릿지 사전은 'scrounge'를 "to get things, especially money or food, by asking for them instead of buying them or working for them(물건, 특히 돈이나 음식을 직접 사거나 그것을 얻기 위해 일하는 대신 구걸하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Peter never buys anything - he just scrounges (off his friends)(피터는 아무것도 자기 돈을 주고 사지 않는다. 그냥 (친구들에게) 구걸해서 얻어 낸다."

콜린스 사전은 'scrounge'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone scrounges something such as food or money, you disapprove of them because they get it by asking for it, rather than by buying it or earning it(누군가 음식이나 돈 같은 것을 scrounge 한다고 말하면, 그것을 직접 사거나 노력을 해서 얻기보다는 구걸을 해서 얻으려고 하기 때문에 그들을 못마땅하게 여기는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)하고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"Williams had to scrounge enough money to get his car out of the car park(윌리엄스는 주차장에서 자신의 차를 꺼내 오기 위해 돈을 얻으러 다녀야 했다)."

"The government did not give them money, forcing them to scrounge for food(정부는 그들에게 돈을 주지 않아서, 그들은 음식을 구걸하는 처지에 내몰렸다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'scrounge'를 "to get something that you want by asking someone for it instead of by providing it or paying for it yourself(원하는 것을 제공하거나 스스로 값을 치르는 대신 누군가에게 구걸을 해서 얻다)"라고 풀이했다.
