케임브릿지 사전은 'piecemeal'을 "not done according to a plan but done at different times in different ways(계획에 따라 한 게 아니라 각각 다른 때에 다른 방식으로 한)"라고 정의했다.

"Unfortunately, everything is being done piecemeal(불행히도, 모든 것이 단편적으로 행해지고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'piecemeal'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe a change or process as piecemeal, you disapprove of it because it happens gradually, usually at irregular intervals, and is probably not satisfactory(어떤 변화나 과정을 piecemeal이라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 점차적으로, 대개 불규칙한 간격으로 일어나고, 아마도 만족스럽지 않기 때문에 못마땅하게 여기는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
