케임브릿지 사전은 'can't hold a candle to'를 "to not be as good as the person or thing mentioned(언급된 어떤 사람 또는 사물만큼 좋지 못하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Her latest book is readable enough, but it can't hold a candle to her earlier work(그녀의 최신작은 읽을 만하지만, 초기 작품에는 댈 게 아니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'can't hold a candle to'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that one person or thing can't hold a candle to another, you meant that the first person or thing is not nearly as good as the second(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 다른 것에 can't hold a candle 하다면, 전자가 후자만큼은 좋지 못하다는 뜻이다)."

"There is not one rock star today who could hold a candle to any of those composers(그 작곡가들에 견줄 수 있는 록스타는 현재 한 명도 없다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'not hold a candle to'를 "to be much less good, beautiful, impressive etc than someone or something else(어떤 사람 또는 사물에 비해 좋거나 아름답거나, 인상적인 정도가 덜하다)"라고 풀이했다.
