케임브릿지 사전은 'hang by a thread'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a serious situation hangs by a thread, it means that even a slight change can decide what will happen and that a bad result such as death, failure, etc. is likely(심각한 상황이 hang by a thread 한다면, 작은 변화조차 무슨 일이 일어날지를 좌지우지할 수 있고, 죽음, 실패 등의 나쁜 결과 등이 일어날 수 있다는 뜻이다)."

"The mayor's political future has been hanging by a thread since the fraud scandal(시장의 정치적 미래는 그 사기 사건 이후 풍전등화였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hang by a thread'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is hanging by a thread, you mean that it is in a very uncertain state and is unlikely to survive or succeed(어떤 것이 hang by a thread 한다면, 그것이 아주 불확실한 상태에 있으며 살아남거나 성공하지 않을 것 같다는 뜻이다)."
