케임브릿지 사전은 'be at pains to do sth'을 "to try very hard to do something(~을 하려고 아주 많이 노력하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She is at pains to point out how much work she has done(그녀는 자신이 얼마나 많은 일을 해 왔는지 보여 주려고 애를 썼다)."

콜린스 사전은 'be at pains to do something'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone is at pains to do something, they are very eager and anxious to do it, especially because they want to avoid a difficult situation(어떤 사람이 어떤 일을 하려고 be at pains 하다면, 특히 그들이 어려운 상황을 피하고 싶어서 그것을 하려고 아주 열심이며 간절해한다는 뜻이다)."
