케임브릿지 사전은 'patchy'를 "only existing or happening in some parts(일부 부분에서만 존재하거나 일어나는)"라고 정의했다.

"The varnish is a little patchy on this table(탁자에 바니시가 군데군데 칠해져 있다)."

"The morning will start with some patchy rain/cloud/fog at first(아침은 처음엔 군데군데 비가 내리거나/구름이 끼거나/안개가 끼며 시작하겠습니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'patchy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A patchy substance or colour exists in some places but not in others, or is thick in some places and thin in others(patchy한 물질 또는 색깔은 전체가 아니라 일부에만 존재하거나, 전체가 아니라 일부분에만 두껍고 나머지에는 얇은 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'patchy'를 "happening or existing in some places but not in other places(전체가 아니라 일부분에만 일어나거나 존재하는)"라고 풀이했다.

"Demand for the product has been patchy(그 제품의 수요는 뜨문뜨문 있었다)."
