케임브릿지 사전은 'drop the ball'을 "to make a mistake, especially by not taking action or dealing with something that should have been planned for(특히 행동을 취하지 않거나 계획되어야 했던 것을 대처하지 않음으로써 실수를 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"For God's sake don't drop the ball on this - we're relying on you(제발 이 일은 실수하지 마. 우린 네게 의지하고 있다고)."
