케임브릿지 사전은 'optometrist'를 "someone whose job is examining people's eyes and selling glasses or contact lenses to correct sight problems(사람들의 눈을 검사하고 시력 문제를 교정하기 위해 안경이나 콘택트 렌즈를 파는 일이 직업인 사람)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'optician'을 이렇게 설명했다. "An optician is someone whose job involves testing people's sight, and making or selling glasses and contact lenses(optician은 사람들의 시력을 검사하고, 안경과 콘택트 렌즈를 만들거나 파는 일을 포함하는 직업을 가진 사람)."

맥밀란 사전은 'optometrist'를 "someone whose job is to test people’s sight and make and sell glasses. The shop that they work in is also called an optician or an optician’s(사람들의 시력을 검사하고 안경을 만들고 파는 일이 직업인 사람. 그들이 일하는 가게는 optician 또는 optician's라고도 불린다)."라고 풀이했다.
