케임브릿지 사전은 'eclectic'을 이렇게 정의했다. "Methods, beliefs, ideas, etc. that are eclectic combine whatever seem the best or most useful things from many different areas or systems, rather than following a single system(eclectic한 방법, 믿음, 아이디어 등은 단일한 체계를 따르기보다는 많고 다양한 분야 또는 체계에서 유래한 것들 중 가장 최고 또는 가장 유용한 것들을 모은 것이다)"

"an eclectic style/approach(다양한 스타일/접근)"

"an eclectic taste in literature(다양한 문학 취향)"

콜린스 사전은 'eclectic'을 이렇게 설명했다. "An eclectic collection of objects, ideas, or beliefs is wide-ranging and comes from many different sources(eclectic한 대상, 아이디어, 또는 믿음은 범위가 넓고, 많고 다양한 출처에서 온 것들이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"...an eclectic collection of paintings, drawings, and prints(...다양한 그림과 출판물 소장품)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'eclectic'을 "an eclectic group of people, things, or ideas is interesting or unusual because it consists of many different types(eclectic한 사람, 사물, 또는 아이디어의 그룹은 많은 다양한 종류로 구성되었기 때문에 흥미롭거나 특이한 것이다)
