케임브릿지 사전은 'tongue in cheek'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If you say something tongue in cheek, you intend it to be understood as a joke, although you might appear to be serious(어떤 것을 tongue in cheek하게 말하면, 그것이 진지하게 보인다 하더라도 실제로는 농담으로 받아들여지도록 의도하는 것이다)

"He said that he was a huge fan of the president, although I suspect it was tongue in cheek(그는 자신이 대통령의 굉장한 팬이라고 말했는데, 내가 보기에는 우스개로 한 말 같다)."

콜린스 사전은 'tongue in- heek'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A tongue-in-cheek remark or attitude is not serious, although it may seem to be(tongue-in-cheek한 발언이나 태도는 진지해 보일지라도 실제로는 진지하지 않은 것이다)."

"...a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek approach(...가벼운, 농담조의 접근)."

"This is all slightly tongue-in-cheek, I'd like to make that clear(이것은 조금 농담입니다. 그 점을 명확히 하고 싶군요)."

맥밀란 사전은 'tongue-in-cheek'을 "intended to be humorous and not meant seriously(진지하게가 아니라, 유머러스하게 의도된)"라고 풀이했다.
